Last week I completed the BCU L-1 Coach training. There are some differences in the training between ACA and BCU. The thing I found most interesting was the focus on all paddle sports. As a BCU coach we did not focus on just a sea kayak. We also developed our paddle board, play boat, sit on top, and recreational kayak skills.
My coaches were Jen Kleck and Phil Hadley. I learned a lot from them in new ways to reach and coach people. I am not going to elaborate on all of the things that they taught. I had a lot of fun on the paddle board and canoe. And the crossover of skills from those paddle sport crafts to the kayak are easy. There is an advantage of mixing paddle sport crafts in a basic skills class.
I will say that being and ACA instructor and BCU instructor will enhance by ability to help people develop their skills. The other thing I realized about myself is that I let other people’s biases influence me towards not becoming a BCU Coach earlier. From now on I am going to work even harder not to let other people’s preconceived notions influence me.
